Vape Facts and Statistics Parents and Educators Should Know About – A School Newspaper Investigates

As parents and educators we are constantly having to keep updated on the times and trends to assure the kids are receiving the best care and knowledge possible.  When it comes to connecting and interacting with the youth it is essential that us caretakers and teachers can relate to and understand the world’s they live in.   Not only is it vital to draw from our own past childhood feelings and experiences but also about knowing what is going in the right here and now when it comes to popular trends and cultural shifts.  Its hard to know how to speak kids let alone help them grow when you are not taking the time to learn the things that matter to them most which in large part is often shaped by current society.  One such new movement we have seen becoming important to the younger audience is the use of the vaporizer pen.  An industry in its infancy we have seen an explosion in interest by the younger generation in the use of vaporizer pens and vape products.  With vaping becoming such a large part of the mainstream we decided to do a little investigating of our own to see just how prevalent it might be for students.  Here are some of the thoughts we have about just some of the facts and statistics are investigative research team uncovered.

Vape Pen Interesting Fact and Stat #1 – 12% Percent of High School Students Who Have Tried E-Cigarettes (According To StatisticBrain)

We were very surprised to see this over 10% as 1 out of every 10 kids seems like a lot to us.  Since some high school students are of age however this vaping stat and fact might be as alarming as  it seems.  We also strongly feel there is a huge difference between trying something once and becoming addicted to something also reducing the worry.  Vaping is certainly something we want to keep our eye on in the future.

Vape Pen Interesting Fact and Stat #2 – 5.3% Percent of Middle School Students Were Current Users of e-cigarettes (According to the FDA)

This is a number we really want to pay attention to as this is a section of vaping that we want to eliminate all together.  Vaping is about being responsible and following the law so we can not  encourage any behavior that goes against this.  The FDA studies even further notes that during the time period of 2011 to 2015, e-cigarette and vape pen use rose from 0.6 percent to 5.3 percent among middle school students which is simply too much.  This tells us we all need to come together to figure out why such increases are happening.  Again its all about staying, healthy, happy and within the law while keeping the children and headed in the right direction in life.

Vape Pen Interesting Fact and Stat #3 – 4.7 million middle and high school students had used tobacco products in the 30 days prior to the National Youth Tobacco Survey studied by the CDC (According to the CDC)

The bright side about the vape pen is that if it has anything to do reducing this number we are headed on the right path.  As a safe alternative to cigarettes and tobacco, vape pens might actually be helping young students avoid nicotine addiction which is always a positive.  While the verdict is still out on the vape pen but the message is clear and that is all adults and educators should be aware of this new phenomenon and manage parenting and teaching strategies accordingly.

Good News, Bad News – The Current State of The Newspaper

We would be fools not to admit that the traditional newspaper as we used to know it is on a decline.  Once a staple of almost every household the newspaper has been slowly replaced with the fascination of mobile digital media.  While the actual news is a popular as ever before the newspaper as a delivery source can not say same.  Thanks to the internet and smartphones and tablets the concepts and innovations that cover the news have become so much more robust then what a standard old school paper newspaper can provide.  With all that being said our school newspaper is going as strong as ever mostly because we have a built in audience and different financial agendas then mainstream newspaper outlets.  This still does not mean we are not constantly trying to improve and adapt with the times which is why we find infographics like this one so informative.  By looking at the current state of the newspaper we can get a good feel for the direction we need to take to stay relevant in the future.  Lets review a few of the numbers and insights that we think can be of help when it comes to making us a better school newspaper.

Newspaper Status Fact and Stat #1: 56% Percentage Of Newspaper Readers That Prefer Local News and Information

While we are a school newspaper so most everything happens to be local in nature we have put even more emphasis on covering topics and subject matter that hits home with the community.  We have even gone outside the school to cover local pieces so that we can relate on a broader spectrum with more coverage of what matters most to the people close to us.  This number really highlights the importance for newspapers to take local issues seriously as this plays a major role in connecting to readers.

Newspaper Status Fact and Stat #2: 9% Percentage Of People That Turn To The Newspaper For News

As the lowest number on the list this number really highlights the depressing times that print newspaper currently face.  We think our school print newspaper still has a long life ahead of itself but that does not mean we are not currently making small transitions to the digital space.  We do understand that eventually there will come a time when almost everything news related will be online and this statistic is a great reminder to start to prepare for when that day comes.

Newspaper Status Fact and Stat #3: 31% and 29% Percentages Of People That Read Newspapers Weekly or Monthly Respectively

The two highest numbers on the list for us this showcases the point that people do not really need print newspapers on a daily basis anymore.  After doing some other similar research we did decide to move the school newspaper from a weekly publication to a monthly publication which has done wonders for us for a number of reasons.  Going to a monthly system has freed up much needed resources while also allowing us to improve our newspaper content.
