Good News, Bad News – The Current State of The Newspaper

We would be fools not to admit that the traditional newspaper as we used to know it is on a decline.  Once a staple of almost every household the newspaper has been slowly replaced with the fascination of mobile digital media.  While the actual news is a popular as ever before the newspaper as a delivery source can not say same.  Thanks to the internet and smartphones and tablets the concepts and innovations that cover the news have become so much more robust then what a standard old school paper newspaper can provide.  With all that being said our school newspaper is going as strong as ever mostly because we have a built in audience and different financial agendas then mainstream newspaper outlets.  This still does not mean we are not constantly trying to improve and adapt with the times which is why we find infographics like this one so informative.  By looking at the current state of the newspaper we can get a good feel for the direction we need to take to stay relevant in the future.  Lets review a few of the numbers and insights that we think can be of help when it comes to making us a better school newspaper.

Newspaper Status Fact and Stat #1: 56% Percentage Of Newspaper Readers That Prefer Local News and Information

While we are a school newspaper so most everything happens to be local in nature we have put even more emphasis on covering topics and subject matter that hits home with the community.  We have even gone outside the school to cover local pieces so that we can relate on a broader spectrum with more coverage of what matters most to the people close to us.  This number really highlights the importance for newspapers to take local issues seriously as this plays a major role in connecting to readers.

Newspaper Status Fact and Stat #2: 9% Percentage Of People That Turn To The Newspaper For News

As the lowest number on the list this number really highlights the depressing times that print newspaper currently face.  We think our school print newspaper still has a long life ahead of itself but that does not mean we are not currently making small transitions to the digital space.  We do understand that eventually there will come a time when almost everything news related will be online and this statistic is a great reminder to start to prepare for when that day comes.

Newspaper Status Fact and Stat #3: 31% and 29% Percentages Of People That Read Newspapers Weekly or Monthly Respectively

The two highest numbers on the list for us this showcases the point that people do not really need print newspapers on a daily basis anymore.  After doing some other similar research we did decide to move the school newspaper from a weekly publication to a monthly publication which has done wonders for us for a number of reasons.  Going to a monthly system has freed up much needed resources while also allowing us to improve our newspaper content.
